GMail Backup
I just found out about GMail Backup. It's a little free program that will back up all of your GMail - or some of it, depending upon the dates you select - to your hard drive.
It moved slowly, even on my fast connection. I first set out to back up all of my almost 10,000 archived emails, but then realized that at the rate it was downloading them, about 11 Kb per second, it was going to take hours. So I set it to download the last full year of emails instead, which should suffice in an emergency situation.
